In our American culture, if we read Psalm 23 and it said “The Lord is my CEO” we would have pictures and thoughts come to mind about what a CEO is. However, the passage says nothing about a “CEO,” Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
I (Mike) thought I knew what this meant. I had read Psalm 23, memorized Psalm 23, and even played a sheep in a Christmas play as a kid (just kidding…but you get the point). However, I recently found out that I’ve been missing a lot of the original meaning of David’s song in Psalm 23. I just finished A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23, and discovered that each line of this Psalm is filled this a meaning that is had missed. For instance did you know that “You anoint my head with oil…” has far more to do with insects than with priestly rituals.
This book was written in 1970 and has sold over 2 million copies. It has lasted 40 years and it will last many more. Let me encourage you to slowly read this little book and let Psalm 23 come alive in your mind and heart. The Lord really IS our Shepherd, but it is helpful to know what that actually means.
